Chiropractic care can be used to treat back pain, neck pain, sports injuries and more
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic care is the most widely used natural healthcare profession in the world. Chiropractors specialise in the examination, diagnosis and management of problems and/or conditions that can affect the nerves, joints or muscles of the body.
Dysfunction of the spine, joints or muscles may manifest itself as pain, often causing low back pain, neck pain or cervicogenic headaches. It may also cause irritation to the nervous system, which may lead to symptoms such as arm (Brachialgia) or leg pain (Sciatica). Chiropractic is better known for the treatment of back pain, neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. However, we also treat many other conditions (please see condition we treat).
As chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, you do not need to be referred by your doctor (unless it is a requirement of your health insurance company). Many of our patients are, however, recommended to see us by their doctors.
The manipulation of joints (‘adjustments’) is commonly the main basis of your chiropractic care for your condition. However, your Chiropractor may also employ other procedures in the course of your care. These may include massage techniques, dry needling/ medical acupuncture, and mobilisation. You may also be advised to make lifestyle adjustments such as dietary change, workstation and posture alterations, and exercise programmes. The use of heat or cold therapy may also be advised.
If your chiropractor considers that your condition would be better managed by another healthcare practitioner or your GP we will refer you to them.

What is a chiropractic adjustment or joint manipulation?
A Chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force to a joint in a precise direction made by the Chiropractor’s hand. This is used to restore the joint to normal motion, reduce muscle spasm and alleviate the associated pain.
Does treatment hurt?
A Chiropractic adjustment does not generally hurt, although there may be some minor discomfort which quickly passes. Patients normally find that after the initial treatment or two, as your symptoms improve and you feel more relaxed with your Chiropractor, treatments are generally much more pleasant.

What are the risks?
Chiropractic carries far fewer risks than many other possible treatment options. Serious side effects are extremely uncommon. Very rarely, neck manipulation has been linked with strokes, although research has not definitively proven this and has shown that Chiropractic can be one of the most effective and safest forms of treatment for certain conditions. Our Chiropractors in Sheffield will be happy to discuss any concerns that you may have or offer alternative Chiropractic options for your treatment.
